An age-graded framework for humane education, ages 0–15

“Be kind to animals” gives a child nothing to do. The distance a three-year-old may safely close, and the question a fourteen-year-old should be made to sit with, are not the same thing. Musubi no Mori sets out humane education in three developmental layers — Roots, Trunk, Bloom — with concrete objectives, activities and welfare safeguards, grounded in international animal-welfare frameworks. Published openly for anyone to adapt.

Aligned to the national curriculum 日本語 / English日本語 / English

THE PROBLEM

Why the framework is graded by age

When humane education fails, the cause is rarely a lack of goodwill. It is the design.

1

Demands that outrun development

Duty means nothing to a three-year-old; “isn’t she sweet” insults a fourteen-year-old. Mismatched teaching either bores the child or burdens the animal.

2

One-off contact, then nothing

A petting session is remembered but changes nothing. Responsibility and observation grow only from daily care that is recorded and continued.

3

The animal’s welfare drops out

Chase the learning outcome alone and the animal becomes a teaching aid. An activity that cannot protect welfare teaches children the wrong norm.

A programme may only be designed inside the space where the child’s developmental stage and the animal’s welfare can both be honoured at once.

Built on frameworks the world already shares

Not a private set of values: the frameworks routinely cited in animal-welfare science, translated directly into rules a school can run on.

The Five Freedoms — as operating rules

Set out in the UK in the 1960s and still the common starting point for animal welfare. Here they become five items a child can audit every week.

Freedom from hunger and thirst
Water and feed never interrupted, weekends included
Freedom from discomfort
Right temperature and humidity, enough space, daily cleaning
Freedom from pain, injury and disease
Twice-yearly checks; same-day veterinary care when something is wrong
Freedom from fear and distress
No chasing, no shouting, always a place to retreat
Freedom to express normal behaviour
Room to dig, climb, dust-bathe — to behave as the species does

The 2020 Five Domains Model — as the assessment frame

The current model, which asks not only whether suffering is absent but whether positive experience is present. Its 2020 revision renamed Domain 4 “Behavioural Interactions” and wrote human interaction explicitly into the structure — precisely the territory a school programme enters.

  • 1. 栄養Nutrition
Appropriate feed and constantly fresh water
Physical Environment
Temperature, humidity, space, cleanliness, safety
  • 3. 健康Health
Routine veterinary checks and a same-day response to anything abnormal
Behavioural Interactions
Interaction with environment, other animals and humans, in the species' own way
Mental State
The subjective experience arising from the four domains above
◎

One WelfareOne Welfare

Animal welfare, human wellbeing and environmental sustainability cannot be separated. This is why the garden, the animals and the community clean-up are designed as one loop.

◎

Alignment with the national curriculum

It maps directly onto the ethics strands on the value of life and care for nature, and overlaps with science, social studies and mathematics. No new timetable slot is required.

◎

ESD / SDGsESD and the SDGs

It sits inside education for sustainable development, connecting naturally to biodiversity, responsible consumption and community wellbeing.

THREE STAGES

Roots, Trunk, Bloom — the relationship changes with age

Facing the same rabbit, a five-year-old touches, a ten-year-old cares, a fifteen-year-old moves society on behalf of lives like hers. Choose a stage.

First, touch a life

The child at this stage

Learns by imitation, not explanation — the adult's own conduct is the curriculum
Knows the world through the whole body: texture, smell, warmth
A repeating daily rhythm builds security and will

What we are aiming for

Knows in the body that a living being moves, eats, sleeps and dies
Feels: not frightening, lovable, worth protecting
Senses that continuing every day is itself meaningful

What they actually do

Held by an adult, at a distance. Never made to touch
An adult guides the hand; ten seconds and stop
One role, every day. An adult measures the amount
Never lifted up. Wait for the animal to approach
Feed, clean, observe. Records kept as drawings

Welfare safeguards at this stage

Both the child and the animal keep the right to say no
Always provide a refuge; never allow chasing
Wash hands before and after, and explain why
How it is assessed
Assessment is not a test: anecdotal records by the teacher, and the child's own drawings.

GROUND RULES

If you cannot meet it, do not run it

These are the conditions of use. If even one of the six cannot be met, do not begin.

1

An animal is a companion, not a teaching aid

No burden may be placed on an animal in the name of learning.

2

If welfare cannot be met, the activity does not happen

Where the Five Freedoms and Five Domains cannot be met, the programme does not run.

3

The right to say no

No child is pressed to touch. Every animal keeps a refuge and time to rest.

4

Veterinary involvement is a precondition

Routine checks, a written husbandry manual, and an emergency contact chain.

5

Children's safety is protected in parallel

Zoonosis controls, allergy accommodations, rigorous hand hygiene.

6

Death is not hidden

The facts are told plainly, there is time to say goodbye, and the conversation stays open.

Six steps to start

1

Understand where you are

Count the hours, hands and space you actually have. Decide capacity per animal before choosing species.

2

Partner with a veterinarian

Contract before you begin. Put checks, guidance and emergency care in writing.

3

Start small

One or two small species first. A school dog or cat comes later, over six months.

4

Post the rules

Put the handling agreement and the Five Freedoms audit at children's eye level.

5

Audit weekly

Pupils and staff audit together — the auditing is itself the lesson.

6

Hand it on

Pass records and procedures to the next cohort each year. Continuity is what protects the animals.

Decide by hours and hands per animal, never by variety. Begin with small animals — rabbits, guinea pigs, hens, aquatic species — and bring in a school dog or cat only once a named keeper and a retreat room exist, over six months.

THE SONG

A song they can sing every day

“Musubi no Uta” is written to be sung every day — at morning circle, or before the care rota. Waiting, tending, handing on: what this framework asks of a child, folded into five stanzas. The karaoke video below is vertical (9:16), with the words on screen.

1

Gently, gently — a small life here
Warm against your open hand
We won’t chase you, we will wait here
You can run — we’ll still be here

2

They have no words to tell us how they feel
But look them in the eye and you will know
The moment that you wanted to protect them
You became the forest, you became the wood

3

Every morning: food and water
Sweep the floor and write it down
If you don’t come, someone’s waiting
So we keep this small work up

4

One day you will leave this forest
But your hands will not forget
Pass it on to someone after
Reach your small hand out again

5

Close your eyes and hear the colours
Low notes are the colour of earth
High notes are the colour of daylight
Paint the sound a living thing makes
